Paul Channing • 4 December 2024

A Gem in Cornwall's Crown

Nestled in the picturesque town of Padstow, Cornwall, Cove Cottage stands as a testament to the region's rich architectural heritage. This Grade II listed property, dating back to the early 18th century, embodies the charm and character that make Padstow a beloved destination.

The Challenge

As conservation architects, we were presented with a formidable task: to breathe new life into this historic gem while preserving its unique character. Due to decay, Cove Cottage requires extensive structural repairs and a complete refurbishment of its external envelope.

Our Approach

Structural Integrity

The first priority is addressing the cottage's structural issues. We assessed the damage and developed a comprehensive plan to address the building's structure, ensuring its longevity for future generations.

Roofing and Cladding

One of the most distinctive features of Cornish architecture is the use of local materials. Authentic Delabole slate for the roof and cladding will maintain the cottage's traditional appearance while improving its weather resistance.

Windows and Doors

Replacing the windows and doors presented a unique challenge. We designed bespoke solutions honouring original designs while incorporating modern energy-efficient technologies.

Balancing Tradition and Modernity

Our team's expertise in traditional building techniques allows us to develop high-performance solutions that meet modern expectations without compromising the cottage's historic integrity. This delicate balance was crucial in securing listed building consent and satisfying the local conservation officer.

The Result

Once restored, Cove Cottage will be a shining example of how historic properties can be sensitively updated for modern living. Its refurbished exterior seamlessly blends with Padstow's charming streetscape, while the interior offers all the comforts expected in a 21st-century home.

This project preserves a piece of Padstow's architectural history and ensures that Cove Cottage will continue to be a cherished part of the community for generations to come.

The late 18th-century Grade II-listed gateway to South Yard, a testament to Devonport's rich maritime heritage, was accidentally toppled in a traffic incident. As conservation architects, we were given a unique opportunity to piece together this architectural puzzle and breathe new life into a cherished local landmark.
