The project presented several unique challenges that required careful consideration and innovative solutions.
The primary challenge was to create a modern facility while respecting the integrity of the Grade II listed reservoir. The footings were designed to have minimal impact on the existing structure. The reservoir needed to be stabilised without compromising its historical significance. We achieved this by infilling it with loose material and capping it with concrete, providing a solid foundation for the new structure. The new building was designed to appear to "hover" over the boundary walls.
The reservoir walls required careful repair. We employed traditional materials and techniques on a 'like-for-like' basis, preserving the authenticity of the original structure.
While respecting the site's heritage, we needed to create a space that met the needs of contemporary creative businesses. The result is a three-story state-of-the-art building offering over 1,500m² of flexible studio space.
We ensured that all interventions were sympathetic to the listed structure, satisfying conservation policy and securing necessary approvals.
The building's lightweight appearance, seemingly floating above the existing walls, demonstrates our ability to marry modern design with historical contexts.
By transforming a derelict structure into a vibrant workspace, we contributed to the sustainable regeneration of Penzance's town centre.
Our design of the customisable lighting system enhances the building's functionality and creates a striking nocturnal presence.
The Penzance Creative Cluster, now known as Pixel, is set to become a hub for the town's thriving creative sector. With 40 workshops dedicated to small and medium-sized enterprises in the creative industry, this project is poised to boost local employment and innovation.
As we approach the opening date in January 2025, it's clear that this project represents more than just a building renovation. It's a testament to the power of thoughtful conservation architecture in revitalising communities and preserving our architectural heritage for future generations.
The Penzance Creative Cluster is a shining example of how, with careful planning and expertise, we can breathe new life into historical structures while meeting the needs of modern businesses. It's a project that not only preserves the past but also confidently looks towards the future.
