Three Generations, One Home: Reviving a 17th Century Legacy

PL9   |   Sensitive Expansion of a Grade II Listed Plymouth Residence

A Historic Challenge

In the heart of Plymstock, a Grade II listed 17th-century house awaits transformation. Our brief is to sensitively expand and refurbish this historic property to accommodate three generations of family life while preserving its heritage significance.

Vision for Renewal

The project encompasses:

  • Evolution from three to five bedrooms.
  • Creation of generous open-plan living spaces.
  • Complete heritage-sensitive refurbishment.
  • Integration of modern family requirements.
  • Preservation of historic character.

Material Heritage

Our design draws direct inspiration from the existing building's fabric:

  • Traditional lime mortar applications.
  • Local rubble stone construction.
  • Distinctive riven slate detailing.
  • Contemporary interpretation of historic materials.
  • Innovative use of traditional techniques.

Sustainable Heritage

As certified members of the Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance (STBA), our approach includes:

  • Implementation of the 'whole house approach' assessment method.
  • Historic England-supported retrofit improvements.
  • Careful balance of performance and preservation.
  • Sustainable solutions appropriate for listed buildings.
  • Future-proofing the historic fabric.

Design Philosophy

The extension demonstrates how traditional materials can be reimagined:

  • Contemporary detailing of historic materials.
  • Thoughtful junction between old and new.
  • Respect for traditional building methods.
  • Modern interpretation of local vernacular.
  • Harmonious blend of past and present.

Looking Forward

With planning and listed building applications submitted, this project demonstrates:

  • Sensitive adaptation of historic homes for modern families.
  • Creative use of traditional materials in contemporary ways.
  • Thoughtful space planning for multi-generational living.
  • Preservation of 17th-century architectural heritage.

This transformation showcases how historic properties can evolve to meet contemporary family needs while preserving their heritage significance for future generations.
